W7.0 Social Media Fast

FacebookingSocial Media Fast

One of my suggestions for this unit is to try a self-imposed social media fast of some kind. You'll have to decide what is appropriate and prudential for you (i.e. don't lose your job, your spouse, or your children over it).

Purpose: To see how often we reach for social media and why we do it. To see if we reach for different activities when social media stops being an option.

Ground rules

  1. Email and Texting is still allowed no matter which option you choose.
  2. Social Media sites will be defined as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Flickr, and Blogs (and anything like one of these sites)
  3. Using a 3rd party app like Hootsuite or Tweetdeck to get to your social media is not fair
  4. You can still participate online in this course on learn.canvas.net.
  5. You cannot use this as an opportunity to try out some social media site in another country.

Choose your own adventure

Option 1: Go on a 48-hour fast from all Social Media sites

Option 2: Go on a 24-hour fast from all Social Media sites

Option 3: Go on a 24-hour fast from most Social Media sites

Option 4: Go on a 48-hour fast from Social Media except for work.

How?

Announce your fast in the Facebook Group or on Twitter when you "go dark" and then say hi when you return. This will keep you at least a little bit honest about it.

I'll have you report on your findings at the end of the unit.
