Two Iowa caucuses stand out as excellent examples of the power of this event in the selection of Presidential candidates. An unknown Georgia governor and peanut farmer Jimmy Carter was able to gain name recognition and respect by spending huge amounts of time in the state. He bicycled with his family and staff, met folks one on one, and took full advantage of the “retail politics” for which Iowa is so well known. A freshman, black Senator from Illinois, Barak Obama, campaigned in Iowa using his charm and rhetorical skills to generate attention and support. Overcoming the much better known New York Senator Hillary Clinton, Obama mobilized young and minority voters, and liberal Democrats to fashion a winning coalition. In both cases Iowa gave a political opportunity to two candidates who would have had a much harder time rising to the top in larger and more expensive primaries. |
