Final Exam Review

Test Review for Introduction to Psychology-Online.  The final exam will contain 10 questions and you will be asked to pick a subset of those questions to answer.  Your answers should be 1-2 paragraphs long and draw on material you have learned in this course.  You will have 2 hours to complete this “open book” essay final.  Preparation will be important since you will not have time to waste moving between lecture notes and readings and your exam. 

 

  1. Why does Psychology emphasize the role of scientific analysis and study as opposed to intuition?  Describe the scientific method and how it is useful in explaining behavior.
  2. Compare Behaviorism, Cognitive psychology, and Psychodynamic psychology.  How are they used to understand and predict human behavior?
  3. Describe the structure and functions of the neuron.  Weave in a discussion of neuroplasticity.
  4. What is the difference between classical and operant conditioning.  Provide some examples.
  5. What is programmed learning and which model of conditioning does it best reflect?
  6. Compare Chomsky’s emphasis of “deep structure” in language to Skinner’s more behavioral emphasis.
  7. What are the major components of personality according to Freud? Describe each component.
  8. What is implicit memory? How does priming relate to this type of memory?
  9. What is selection attention in perception? Give an example.
  10.  What are the Big Five in Personality Theory and how are they measured?
  11. What is Asperger’s Syndrome and how has the use of the this terms changed with the new diagnostic manual?
  12. Discuss the role of prosody in the language of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
  13.  Compare the James-Lange Theory of Emotion with the Two-Factor Theory of Emotion.  Which sees the labeling of arousal as a critical issue?
  14. Who was Phineas Gage and how did his fate help to explain emotional response?
  15. How did Latane and Darley explain what happened in the Kitty Genovese case?
  16. Explain how the studies of Solomon Asch helped to explain conformity.
  17. Explain how the studies of Milgram helped to explain conformity.
  18. What is bipolar disorder and how is it treated?
  19.  What is Positive Psychology and in what ways does it represent a departure from most of Clinical Psychology
  20.  Describe a personal emotional response that you have experienced to some event in your life.  How would you process it from a cognitive, behavioral, and physiological perspective?
