Open Badges contain "baked-in" data

Open Digital Badges are not just images, they include:

  • badge name
  • description of the badge
  • criteria for earning the badge
  • issuer
  • evidence of the achievement (optional)
  • date issued
  • earner id
  • and other custom information

After a badge has been issued, the metadata is baked-in to the image, so that information about the badge travels with it. Open Badges are not easily counterfeited because they comply with the data standard and can be validated with Badgr's BadgeCheck Links to an external site., an Open Badges backpack service like Badgr.io Links to an external site., or any other Open Badges validator tool.

Open Badges are meant to be shared (also like cake)! You can include your Open Badges just about anywhere: your email signature, blog, digital resumes or transcripts. You can share your digital badges to social media sites via URL such as Facebook or LinkedIn.

The Open Badges website Links to an external site. is a great resource for learning more about Open Badges and the value of earning and issuing them.
