Activity 9. Supporting students
Consider the following quote:
“Inclusive teaching does not mean that the academic needs to be an expert on every religion, illness, cultural group etc., but it should include a willingness to ask students, engage in discussion and make appropriate changes, and be prepared to understand and seek out information/resources.” (De Fazio, 2015, p. 2)
As you reflect on your own teaching context, consider the ways in which academic and professional staff can work together to provide integrated support both within and outside the classroom. Specifically consider the following.
- What types of supports could be constructively integrated or embedded within the learning content or classroom settings? How could embedding this support be achieved? What might be the benefits of including this support? Are there any examples of support that is embedded or integrated into learning content or classroom settings within your institution?
- Where is it more appropriate/necessary to provide support outside the classroom? How could the relevance of this support be more clearly linked to the students’ learning?
- How do academic and professional staff collaborate to support students? Could this collaboration be more effective to support students more holistically?
Write a reflection on your responses to these questions and discuss this with your critical friends.
