Activity 8. Understanding your institution
To better understand how your institution reflects its understandings of and responsiveness to student diversity, find out who at your institution provides services and resources to students. For example, find out:
- who is responsible for student equity matters at your institution (this person may be a Director of Equity and Diversity or someone with a similar title);
- the areas of the institution responsible for providing important support to students, such as counselling, disability support and learning support services;
- the area of the institution which supports Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students;
- the area of the institution which supports international students; and
- about other support services available at your institution.
From these areas, you will be able to access information and resources about the following:
- polices;
- diversity plans;
- assessment policies and practices;
- teaching approaches;
- graduate attributes/qualities/competencies;
- celebrations/observances, e.g. Eid, Welcome to Country or Acknowledgement of Country;
- co-curricular activities;
- additional students services and facilities, e.g. prayer rooms, chaplains, student associations, etc.;
- health and counselling services;
- learning support services; and
- transition and retention strategies.
Undertaking this activity will assist you in understanding the services and resources available at your institution, which will help you to support your students and direct them to these services.
