4.5 Application

Design your own culture

Now that you have had some time to explore the various pieces of a blended culture, you are ready to start adding strategies concerning culture to your own roll-out plan!

To help you organize your thoughts, there is a graphic below (also included on your interactive handout Links to an external site.) that identifies three sections:

  • Must-haves
  • Next steps
  • Eventually

This will help you plan out what culture pieces you MUST roll out right away (or even strategies you are already use), what steps you should take to start rolling out those strategies, and also some other items that you would like to add in eventually. There is also a rationale column to get you thinking more about the “why.” This is where you should reflect on why the strategy is vital to your roll-out plan as a whole (think of how it relates to space and routines). This is a key part of designing a strong roll-out plan because it helps you to clearly explain how each building block is linked to your model, classroom design, and/or instruction as a whole.

When brainstorming, think about:

  1. Expectations for your students and yourself
  2. How much ownership you would like your students to take of their own learning
  3. What strategies you already have in place
  4. What strengths and weaknesses are already present within your current culture
  5. Student collaboration (how do students work with each other?)
  6. How you currently use data and incentives

You have 30 minutes to work on both your design and the rationale behind it. Once you are done, you will have the opportunity to share your design with your peers for feedback through discussion prompts.
