3.5 Application

Design your own routines

Now that you have had some time to explore various strategies for rolling out routines, you are ready to start designing your own roll-out plan!

To help you organize your thoughts, there is a graphic below (also included on your interactive handout Links to an external site.) that identifies three sections:

  • Must-haves
  • Next steps
  • Eventually

This will help you plan out what routines you MUST have right away, what steps you should take to start rolling out those routines, and also some other items that you would like to add in eventually. There is also a rationale column to get you thinking more about the “why.” This is where you should reflect on why the strategy is vital to your roll-out plan. This is a key part of designing a strong roll-out plan because it helps you to clearly explain how the routine is linked to your model, classroom design, and/or instruction as a whole.

When brainstorming, think about:

  1. How you decided to set up your space
  2. What daily actions students will need to complete
  3. How students will move around the classroom
  4. Where materials are located (and how you plan to pass them out)
  5. The demographics of your classroom (what is age appropriate)

You have 30 minutes to work on both your design and the rationale behind it. Once you are done, you will have the opportunity to share your design with your peers for feedback through the discussion forum in the collaboration section.
