Teaching Arguments - Fletcher Reading

Teaching Arguments: Rhetorical Comprehension, Critique, and Response

One of the main points in this course is that Social Studies teachers need to shift from merely delivering content to helping students learn content through routine writing activities that teach specific skills. Learning how to comprehend, analyze, and respond to arguments are essential steps for students beginning reading and writing like historians. This week‘s featured reading is chapter 1 (pp. 1-27) in Teaching Arguments. The author, Jennifer Fletcher provides engaging classroom activities, writing prompts, graphic organizers, and student samples to help students at all levels read, write, listen, speak, and think rhetorically. The book is available as a free preview online. There will be a discussion prompt following the reading. Then, a quiz on the reading will check your understanding of the material. Lastly, we look forward to hearing your thoughts on how you can adapt this material for your classroom.
