How to Choose Your Path Through the Course

As we mentioned earlier, depending on your role in your company or organization, different parts of the course may be more relevant to you than others. We’ve tried to identify these parts so you can focus on the information that is most useful to you. If you are trying to budget your time, you might focus on the content specific to your role, and perhaps just scan the content aimed at other roles.

In the story of Lulu's Lollipops that will unfold throughout the course, you will hear about Lulu's team members – people just like you who want to learn more about Web accessibility. Imagine that Lulu's team has registered for this course. Lulu has a Webmaster, who will closely follow the Technical information that is shared. Lulu also has a small team of Managers, who will focus on the broader, Organizational advice that is offered, while they work to gain a solid overview of the key requirements for Web accessibility. Finally, Lulu also has a number of Customer Service Representatives, who, as part of their role in supporting clients, have a General interest in ensuring that the company and its website serve the needs of everyone.

To help you navigate to the information most relevant to your needs, we have colour-coded and labelled the content throughout the course as follows. Content that does not appear in coloured boxes is aimed at everyone.

Throughout the content, we’ve also identified elements that should be added to the Web Accessibility Auditing Toolkit you will be assembling during the course. These elements will include links to resource documents and online tools used during auditing activities, as well as software or browser plugins that you may need to install. These will be identified in a green Toolkit box such as the following:

General Tips

This course is intensive, which means that for full and meaningful participation, you may find it to be a lot of work compressed into a short amount of time. You will need to manage your time effectively to successfully make it through the course. Here are a variety of tips that will help you manage your time and get the most out of the course.

Read through the Canvas User Orientation, “Get Started” Module before starting the course Modules if you are not already familiar with using Canvas.
Scan through the entire course before starting the modules.
Read the Introductory pages before starting Module 1.
Set up a folder in your browser’s bookmarks/favourites area before starting the Modules, so that you can add links to tools and resources gathered for your Web Accessibility Auditing Toolkit.
Try to spread your study time evenly over a week, with a couple of hours each weekday, and perhaps a few extra hours on the weekend.
Set regular study periods at the start of the course and stick to them.
Modules are intended to be completed in one week, though you can skip ahead if you are able.
Before starting a Unit, scan through it first to gather a general understanding of the topics covered.
