Course Outline
Week 1
Context
This course was commissioned by Health Education England Links to an external site. (HEE) and North Central East London Links to an external site. (NCEL).
They commissioned two courses: Mental health awareness for health professionals and Physical health awareness for health care workers – These were to be designed to allow health care workers to care for both their patients’ mental and physical health.
Once the commissions were accepted it was decided to use drama to help bring the learning and teaching material to life. Both courses have a six-part drama running alongside the other materials. These films are professionally produced in and around London South Bank University.
The course is thus aimed at healthcare workers in the National Health Service Links to an external site. (NHS) here in the UK. There is an expectation that course participants will have an understanding of how health care is delivered in the UK, and a reasonable knowledge of the roles and responsibilities of the various workers found in NHS care settings.
There is no cost for undertaking this course, or for accessing any of the information on the site, or linked to from the site. At the end of the course you can print out a certificate to show you have attended the course. If you require a validated LSBU certificate sent to your home or work address then there will be a small fee, and you can find details of this in the materials associated with week 8.

Learning Outcomes
At the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Consider how deteriorating mental health impacts on all aspects of a person’s physical health, social welfare and psychological wellbeing
- Appreciate the influence of individual values, assumptions and cultural factors and how they impact on understanding and responding to mental health issues
- Identify different approaches to understanding mental health and how these influence treatment options
- Understand the care pathways available for people with mental health issues
Course Structure
The course takes place over an eight week period. Each week is a 'module' in canvas.net terms. Each of these modules contains a mix of text, image and video-based materials which should take around three hours to work through. There are also exercises to allow course participants to test their learning as they go through the course.
Although the course team will be involved in many of the discussions that take place, it is hoped that participants will not only post their own views, but will comment on others to create a meaningful debate.
Who are you?
We want very much to know who you are and will be starting this right away in week one. However, there are a few quick things to do before the modules start that will help everyone know each other at least on a cursory level.
Set up your profile in Canvas
We plan to have discussions here in Canvas and to that extent, having a profile will help us better know each other and have access to each other. Take a moment to do that now. Instructions are located here.

After the Course
We are in the process of validating some additional materials to allow course participants to gain academic credit. This would require attendance at a 'summer school' at London South Bank University and formal assessment. More details will follow.
