Surname Registry

RootsMOOC Surname/Region Registry

Lots of people are looking for fellow RootsMOOC participants who are researching the same surnames. We made it easy to find those folks by setting up a Surname Registry. Here's how this works.

How do I view the registry?

We have set up the registry as a publicly-viewable Google spreadsheet. This registry is periodically sorted alphabetically by surname. Note that this isn't automatic--as people add their own information, it might appear at the bottom of the registry before Kyle re-sorts it (about once a day). You can easily find a surname by searching the document (ctrl+F on Windows, command+F on Mac).

How do I submit my information?

You'll notice that you can't edit the registry spreadsheet--with thousands of people in the course, that would probably be chaos. :) To make it simple, we set up a form which automatically populates the registry spreadsheet. Submit as many times as you like!

How do I contact someone?

We want to protect the privacy of your personal information as much as possible, so we don't ask you to put your email address or phone number on the public registry. To get in touch with a fellow participant, you will want to use the Conversations tool in Canvas. That way you can swap contact info and not have it available to just anyone.
