Kai Fay works on materials digitization for Harvard Library. They have also been a TA for the Harvard Medical School Countway Library’s online course Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management since the spring of 2020. Their other interests include information literacy, pedagogy, and student engagement in library instruction.

Julie Goldman, BS, MLIS, is the Countway Research Data Services Librarian with the Harvard Library. Julie collaborates with members of the Harvard community on building a data services program that addresses all stages of the data lifecycle. At Countway Library, she works closely with an extensive network of professionals invested in data management and open science to develop and deliver services for students and researchers around the Longwood Medical Area.

Julie runs regular Research Data Management Seminars on many related topics, focused on training biomedical students, faculty, and staff on best practices for organizing, documenting, storing, and sharing research data. Julie is also a Carpentries Instructor and has been advocating for the Carpentries and assisting with workshops across New England.

Julie is co-chair of the Longwood Medical Area Research Data Management Working Group, co-chair of the Harvard Research Data Coordination Team, and actively involved in the Harvard Medical School Research, Rigor, and Reproducibility training efforts.

Julie is the Managing Editor for the Journal of e-Science Librarianship (JeSLIB). In this role, she is responsible for thoroughly formatting accepted articles for the journal.

Recently, Julie served as a PI on an NIH Supplement Grant for Enhancing Data Management and Sharing in NIEHS-Funded Research Grants; as an Adjunct Faculty at Simmons University School of Library and Information Science teaching Scientific Research Data Management; as an instructor on the Elsevier funded Research Data Management Librarian Academy (RDMLA); and as Project Manager for the NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) funded course Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management.

Presentation Abstract

The Harvard Medical School Countway Library’s Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) Best Practices for Biomedical Research Data Management (RDM) launched on Canvas in January 2018 to provide free RDM training to a broad audience. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, student registration almost doubled in less than a month. Previous reports analyzed enrollment periods pre-pandemic and through July 8, 2020. This analysis looks deeper into subsets of student data during the pandemic to understand global interest in and knowledge of biomedical research data management.
