Planning your first class
Logistics, logistics, logistics. Planning your first class ensures that you think about the logistics of running your unit. During your first class, you should start teaching the way you plan to carry on for the rest of the unit, so some planning is essential. Some areas that you may want to give thought to prior to your first class include:
- learning space familiarisation, e.g. physical and virtual room, equipment (AV/IT and the Learning Management System);
- administration, e.g. Unit Coordinator requirements, unit outline, finding out information about your students, previous unit evaluation results, your role in the virtual classroom/Learning Management System, your role in the unit, relevant teaching policies; and
- student learning, e.g. materials, student activities, assessment, timing, consideration of the approach you would like students to take to their learning in your subject, style of teaching.
