Responsibilities

We'll help you build your own ladder.jpg

Being responsible for teaching in higher education may require you to facilitate small group teaching, or conversely very large group teaching or anything in between. This teaching may be face to face, blended or online. The role may also include responsibility for curriculum development and review, assessment and moderation of tasks.

Australian research (see the BLASST [Benchmarking, leadership and advancement of standards for sessional teaching] website Links to an external site.) has identified key criteria for good practice for sessional staff. For example, it is recommended that you:

  1. access career development and academic leadership pathways;
  2. maintain and develop a professional role as teacher, disciplinary expert and researcher;
  3. ensure regular and effective communications across teaching teams; and
  4. engage in professional learning communities (McCormack, 2016, p. 50).

Institutions differ in the range and types of professional learning opportunities that are made available to you.
