Many university academics in the 21st century, except those dedicated only to research work, are expected to engage in scholarly teaching and possibly the scholarship of learning and teaching. Thus there is an expectation that higher education learning and teaching is underpinned by a critical knowledge base in pedagogy/andragogy, and an understanding of learning theories and how they inform our conceptions of and approaches to teaching.
This module provides an overview of the origins of learning theory, its scope and development over time, and associated principles of adult learning. Participants are encouraged to think critically about their own conceptions of learning and teaching, reflect on learning theory in relation to the demands of the contemporary higher education environment, and consider how teaching practices are informed and shaped by theory.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:
- identify and describe the core learning theories that currently influence our conceptions of, and approaches to, teaching in Australian universities; and
- align your academic practice with one or more learning theories.
