The assessment process

The next section of this module provides an overview of the assessment process. Your role as a teacher or unit coordinator will be explored using the figure below showing the assessment process. This module will focus on the first three steps in this process.

Feedback is a process that occurs throughout the assessment cycle and is covered in Module 3. Feedback for learning. In the assessment process, feedback from peers and students informs the design of assessments as a quality improvement process. Assessments may have been undertaken by a previous cohort of students in previous study periods.

When designing assessment, it is important to identify areas for improvement by evaluating each assessment task after each study period. Evaluations include teachers’ reflections on whether the assessment achieved its purpose, student feedback, peer review and student grades. Changes to the curriculum need to be carefully planned with the unit and course team to ensure assessments continue to clearly link to the unit and course learning outcomes.
