Applying constructive alignment activity
Now that you have had a chance to read and understand the three core components to constructive alignment, try applying these to your own unit.
Activity 1. Application to your unit
- Open and read Biggs' Model of Constructive Alignment which includes an example of how constructive alignment looks in practice.
- Download the Constructive alignment table [docx, 29KB] Download Constructive alignment table [docx, 29KB].
- Using this table, look at your course/units. List the learning outcomes and map the assessment methods and teaching/learning activities to the learning outcomes.
- Reflect on the following questions:
- can you see the 'alignment' across the learning outcomes, assessment tasks and teaching/learning activities?
- how effectively do you think the assessment methods/tasks test the knowledge, skills and competency development of your students?
- was there anything you found surprising when doing this activity?
- what 'gaps' (if any) were you able to identify?
- what changes/adjustments are possible for you to make in your current situation?
