Constructive alignment

“Constructive alignment is a principle used for devising teaching and learning activities, and assessment tasks, that directly address the learning outcomes intended in a way not typically achieved in traditional lectures, tutorial classes and examinations.” (Biggs & Tang, 2011).

Alignment involves working from the intended learning outcomes, designing teaching/learning activities needed to build up the relevant knowledge, skills and competencies that students require for your particular unit in order to address those outcomes. Additionally, the assessment tasks need to be designed to demonstrate the achievement of those skills or competencies.
