Most of us would consider planning as an integral part of being successful in any endeavour. Teaching is no different. The task of teachers is to plan successful student learning to enable them to achieve the intended learning outcomes.

In this module you will be introduced to four critical elements and the role each of these play in planning for learning (refer to the image to the right).

If you have completed the module Orientation Week: Teaching your first class, you will have touched on some aspects of these elements. These four elements are relevant if you are planning for one lesson, one session, or a whole series of sessions, and whether you are teaching online or face-to-face. The students’ success in learning will be largely dependent on the effectiveness with which these elements inform your planning.

We would encourage you to keep a journal of your reflections, experiences, thoughts and questions as you progress throughout the weeks. It will provide you with a wealth of material to ponder over, tweak, apply and revise.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you should be able to:

  1. explore the relevance of the student context and outcomes to planning for learning; and
  2. design your teaching using models of lesson planning to support learning tasks and reflection on learning effectiveness.
