Contemplate: Relevant Purpose

Module #2 Awakening Relevant Purpose (June 30 - July 6)

I. Essential Questions

  • What role should an educator play in unleashing the inner passion and purposes of their students?
  • Is an educator responsible for creating learning environments that support personal alignment between a student's passions and the topics studied (i.e personalized learning)

II. Introduction to Awakening Relevant Purpose

Of all the professions in the world, educators are the greatest representations of relevant purpose. Teachers, after all, are entrusted with the mission or purpose of preserving and constantly improving the democratic principles of our society.  They are entrusted with helping youth to find meaning and passion in what they do and aspire to do. The currency is not always financial--it lies in their ability to make a social and intellectual impact.

Relevant Purpose is when we find the magical alignment between our inner passion and external value (relevance) to others.  Simply put, it is a point in time, a period in time, or a lifetime where ones individual unique passion and purpose provides benefit to another individual, organization or community and that entity is willing and able to provide currency for that value.  Often, that currency is economic (i.e. Financial).  Who does not want to get paid to do what they love?  However, there are other currencies and returns we value: emotional, social, physical, spiritual and intellectual.  We should pay attention to these many currencies as we seek relevant purpose. Our goal or mission as entrepreneurial educators is to discover and awaken that relevant purpose in ourselves and our students.

III. Key Terms

  • Alignment: Creating conscious and unconscious harmony between ones inner passions and purpose and external reality.
  • Personal Passion: A persons unique intense desire or enthusiasm for something.  No two humans have the exact same unique purpose and passion.
  • Independent Contractors for LifeYou are your own business. You are your own personal brand.  Explored in depth in Economic Unit of One.
  • The River: A metaphor for external circumstance beyond one’s control.  We cannot control the river, but one controls their personal vessel and the associated navigational tools.  Those with risk understanding, understand the River, evaluate the river, know it can be chaotic or serene, rapid or slow, but in the end an individual has oars in their hands…
