Welcome to this course from the University of Sunderland. It is intended for those who are new to teaching on undergraduate and master's degree courses from United Kingdom Universities. However most of the topics and principles covered apply to higher education studies generally. It is intended to support lecturers who teach students coming from the UK and from across the world.

The content is based on a long running and successful staff development course for new lecturers and teaching assistants at the University of Sunderland. It consists of eight topic areas, each of which will take between 2 to 4 hours to complete. A full course outline is here.

Topic areas within the course are arranged in a linear sequence that firstly sets the scene for UK HE then considers in turn a range of factors that contribute to student learning experiences before looking at how all of these factors may be brought together in a structured and progressional plan for learning. The final topic considers some aspects of summative assessment that relate to marking and feedback. Working through the materials in this linear sequence is recommended for individuals new to teaching in higher education contexts.

The first topic area is about how the UK ensures that Higher Education awards from its Universities are of a high and consistent quality.
