Towards New Models For Learning Analytics
Towards New Models For Learning Analytics.
Abstract
This session will explore how data from a wide range of sources might be analysed in real time to build a picture of the support that learners need. It will examine the typical sources of data and will discuss ways in which models of learners could be built that would use data "on the fly" by adopting approaches from the measurement of learners in electronic learning environments. The session will discuss the use of "ephemeral" data to avoid some of the privacy issues that might otherwise be a barrier to implementing learning analytics.
Bio
Dr. Mike Timms directs the Division of Assessment and Psychometric Research at the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), which develops high quality assessments and conducts cutting edge research in educational measurement. His area of particular interest is in the development of innovative ways to assess students in electronic-learning environments. His research in that area has been widely published in peer-reviewed journals and he was awarded the 2013 Journal for Research on Science Teaching Award by the National Association for Research on Science Teaching for a paper about the development of a simulation-based science assessment.
Prior to joining ACER, Mike was Associate Director of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Program at WestEd, a preeminent educational research and development organization in the United States. He has led large-scale research studies in STEM education, with special focus on computer-based assessment projects, especially through the SimScientists research program (www.simscientists.org). He was involved in the development of two assessment frameworks for the US National Assessment of Educational Progress for which I was awarded the Paul Hood award for excellence in educational research at WestEd
