Your Learners: In Their Words

Module 1: Part 1 - Discovering Your Learners

Your Learners

As an introduction to this course, your project, and Module 1, please take time (approximately 13 minutes) to watch the following videos that highlight the stories of adult learners who pursued educational opportunities after failing to graduate from high school. As you begin the process of discovering your learners, these videos highlight the personal and societal costs of dropping out of formal K12 education from a multi-part documentary series produced by Kentucky Educational Television (KET) titled "Dropping Back In" (Links to an external site.).

The series focuses on the dropout crisis in the U.S. and shares true stories of learners who "dropped out, dropped back in, and got their lives turned around". As you listen to their stories, please reflect on the following:

  • What were the circumstances that caused these adults to drop out?
  • What obstacles did they face dropping back into formal education?
  • How did their pursuit of education as an adult offer them opportunities to improve their lives?
