Mission & Vision
Much like curriculum planning, assessment work must start at the end—meaning that one must establish an end goal or result and then plan backwards from that point. Creating a mission statement, goals, objectives, and outcomes is the foundation of the assessment planning process. This process has several benefits:
- It provides a framework in which assessment professionals can plan and design.
- It creates opportunities for conversations with non-assessment professionals who are new to or wary of the process.
- It creates an opportunity for collaboration among assessment professionals, staff, and administration.
- It provides evidence to upper-level administrators who only need to understand “the big picture.”

This video focuses on connecting your department’s mission, goals, outcomes, to those established at the institutional and divisional levels. We will discuss organizational change, strategies to initiate and guide change, as well as introduce various frameworks to guide planning for change.
Sticky Points and Roadblocks
The process of articulating and aligning each piece can take several weeks, months, or semesters, depending on the scope of the program and the culture of the institution. It can also be frustrating to create the framework and then have logistical roadblocks occur. Perhaps a program defines all its outcomes but then realizes it doesn't have the means to assess all of them, a new mandate changes their purview, etc. It is then up to the assessment professionals and staff to determine what to alter, discard, or maintain in order to realign all of the evidence.
