Module 5: Introduction
Critical Approaches & Ethical Considerations
In addition to the varying choices to make in the assessment planning process, there are a number of critical and ethical considerations to recognize. Differentiating assessment, evaluation, and research (AER) is an important first step, as each respective design carries different procedural and practice-based implications. Setting aside design, our identities and mental models frame our assessment approach and influence our subjectivity. Knowing this reality, how can one better be aware and work to mitigate as much bias as possible in approach? All of these considerations apply to reporting and sharing of efforts, in addition to doing the work itself. Transforming data, identifying prospective audiences, and implementing sharing strategies have many factors to consider in order to be effective.
This module engages participants in identifying appropriate applications, frameworks, and/or guiding questions for the use of Assessment, Evaluation, and Research design in real world higher education applications. In going about the process, this section also encourages folks to recognize their mental models and work to mitigate bias in practice.
Learning Objectives
In completing this module, you will be able to:
- Differentiate between assessment, evaluation, and research
- Identify their own mental models when approaching assessment, evaluation, or research projects
- Identify strategies for mitigating bias in their practices
- Identify multiple strategies for reporting information and audiences for which each strategy may be appropriate
