Module 4: Introduction

Introduction

Imagine a world where there is no description. There are only people, places, and things.

Could you convince friends to download a new song without including a description of the artist, the music, or the effect the music has on you? Would the phrase "it is good" motivate them? If you visited a small village suffering from poverty and returned home to convince others they needed your help, wouldn't you want your friends to understand what it was like to witness such depravation? It would be very difficult if you said, "I went to a village. I met some people. They were hungry."

Life without description is life without definition and emotion. While there are moments when minimalism serves its purpose, when you want to compel someone to action, tell a gripping story, or advertise a product, you turn to description to carry out your plan. In a phrase, description is a powerful mode of communication, and without it, readers feel disconnected from the scene. In this module, you will work on making connections to special places and making sure your readers are "there" with you.
