If you are not able to get the recorder to pick up your microphone, right-click anywhere on the recorder area and choose "Settings."  There will be a little microphone icon in a tab on the bottom of the settings area.

Click that and make sure the recorder is looking for the microphone you want to use.  This is especially helpful to check if you have an external webcam with a microphone or a laptop with a built-in mic but you're actually using a headset mic for recording audio.
