Week 4
Red River (1948)
This feature film was Howard Hawks' first Western. Hawks assigned different hats to each actor to make it easy for the audience to recognize the cowboys during the cattle drive. Matthew Garth (Montgomery Clift) used Hawks' own hat, which was given to him by Gary Cooper. "Spiders built nests in it," Hawks said, "It looked great."
