Assignment: Climate Change Challenge
Putting Nature's Unifying Patterns into Practice
Developing a solution to reduce and/or mitigate climate change for the planet is a daunting task. But, not impossible. We can all pitch in to help and you might even win $100,000 for doing so!
Your assignment:
-
REVIEW each of Nature's Unifying Patterns
.
- CHOOSE ONE of Nature's Unifying Patterns to focus on for your assignment.
- REFER to your Flood Disaster Shelter Design from last week.
- BRAINSTORM THREE potential ways to RE-DESIGN your shelter design in the context of one of nature's unifying patterns.
- HAVE FUN!
- SKETCH your re-designed concept that takes your chosen pattern into account. You can use a design software program if you prefer or else sketch on paper and scan it. Don't worry if you can't draw! Use your imagination. You can use paints, markers, colored pencils, fabric, magazine cut-outs, etc., to embellish your sketch.
- CREATE AN IMAGE of your sketch.
- WRITE a short paragraph that includes the following information:
A 1-paragraph description of:
- Remind us about your shelter design from last week. Tell us what the Functional Group > Functional Subgroup > Function was for your design. (EXAMPLE: maintains physical integrity > manages structural forces > compression)
- Tell us which of NATURE'S UNIFYING PATTERNS that you chose to focus on this week. (EXAMPLE: #4 Nature optimizes rather than maximizes.)
- Provide a bulleted list of 4 ways that your re-design will incorporate your chosen pattern. (EXAMPLE: I will consider shape of material to provide structural integrity, rather than just using more material for strength.)
For this assignment, try to rein your design in at 10% pure creative and 90% reality.
