Spiral-Inspired Re-Design

Your assignment:

  • CHOOSE a design product, process or system that is associated with liquid, gel or paste in some way. For example, it could carry, distribute, transfer, capture, hold, push, drip, etc., any liquid, paste or gel. Ideas could range from a soda can to a faucet to an IV needle to a swimming pool slide. Whatever strikes your fancy.
  • LEARN a bit about your chosen design (don't go too deep; just learn enough to understand how it could be modified)
  1. What material is it may out of?
  2. How is it manufactured?
  3. What is its main function (i.e., liquid is: captured, distributed, cleaned, etc.)?
  4. Why is this design important in the world? (i.e., transfers medicine, filters water, distributes liquid fun, etc.)?
  • ABSTRACT the design pattern. (You've already done this; you are working with a spiral shape that moves liquid efficiently.)
  • BRAINSTORM potential ways to RE-DESIGN your product, process or system by incorporating a spiral-shape into the design to more efficiently move the related liquid.
  • HAVE FUN!
  • SKETCH your re-designed concept for a product, process or system. You can use a design software program if you prefer or else sketch on paper and scan it. Don't worry if you can't draw! Use your imagination. You can use paints, markers, colored pencils, fabric, magazine cut-outs, etc., to embellish your sketch.
  • CREATE AN IMAGE of your sketch.
  • WRITE a short paragraph that includes the following information:
  1. The name of the existing product, process or system that you have re-designed
  2. A name for your spiral-inspired re-design
  3. A 1-paragraph description of:
  • what the design is,
  • what the spiral-inspired selling feature is (in other words, what challenge you are solving with the re-design), and
  • how you imagine the design will work.

For this assignment, try to rein your design in at ~50% reality and ~50% pure creative.
