LESSON 1.3: DESIGN STUDIO

Get Inspired by Feet

Watch this short video (~1min) I created to get you inspired for your Design Studio Assignment. You're going to need to find a foot model for your Foot-Inspired Design Assignment, so keep your eyes open for a foot that inspires you.

Things to think about while watching the video:

  • Why does the foot look the way it does?
  • What is the purpose of the shape of the foot? Size?
  • What do you imagine its natural habitat is, based on the size and shape?
  • What reoccurring patterns do you see across animal species?
  • Can you extract any key design principles?

No transcript for this video (images set to music, no speaking).

If you have watched the video and you still need help to find a foot model, try the following:

  1. Visit Google search IMAGES: Try a query of "animal feet (Links to an external site.)" and you'll get >165 MILLION (yes, million!) image results to sort through. (ignore the incredible amount of animal slippers...please do not design animal feet slippers - it has been done and, as you'll recall from the intro video this week -- bunny slippers are "biomorphic" not "biomimetic").
  2. Visit Flickr Creative Commons: Try "animal feet" in the search query and you'll find loads of images to choose from.

Okay, head to the assignment.
